AL54 16 T.S. Standard Bearer Royal Suedois

French Infantry ca 1780. 54mm Model Soldiers

Royal Suédois, "Royal Swedish regiment", was a foreign regiment with first Swedish, but later German soldiers, in French service. It was enlisted after the Battle of Fleurus in 1690. The officers was largely made up of Swedes.

There was also an Army regiment in Swedish service with this name, which was set up in Pomerania (Wolgast) by Frenchmen and Italians at the end of the year, counting 6 companies, formed on a battalion, also known as the Italian-French battalion.

During the 18th century it was considered desirable that officers spent part of their education time in a foreign country's army.

Even the men often came from a number of countries, as it was not uncommon for captive soldiers or legitarians who went to the enemy. Of the continental superpowers, France was the only country in which Sweden had the best contacts after France supported Sweden economically during the thirty years of war.
