On 21st December the British cavalry had been successful in an action against the French at Sahagun. On 24th December Moore ordered the withdrawal of the army from around Sahagun in two columns. Baird’s Division took the direct northerly route to Astorga.
The rest swung south over the River Elsa, with the rearguard being composed of Craufurd’s Light Brigade supported by the cavalry of Lord Paget.
